Parent Letter May 2020

Dear P.S. 100 Parents and Families,

I hope this finds you in good health, physically and mentally. Thank you to our families for your collaboration, patience and partnership during Remote Learning. We are in this together. It is overwhelming us as well as our children. We truly appreciate your continued partnership in ensuring your children receive the best opportunities for continuous academic success.

I am very proud to have been notified that P.S. 100 has been identified as a Recognition School for the 2019-2020 school year! This means we have been identified as one of the top schools in NYS. Congratulations to our Staff, Students and Parents on all their hard work.

As we begin our 8th Week of Remote Learning and Social Distancing ourselves from the outside world, many of our children (and adults) deal with daily bouts of mixed emotions, anxiety or stress. We worry about their Social Emotional well-being. These feelings often happen when we feel we are not in control. As we struggle with these feelings it is important to remind yourself to remain connected to the outside world. It brings normalcy to our day and lives. I remain connected through safe walks in the afternoon, visiting Google classrooms to see the children, sitting out on my balcony, FaceTime with a friend, board game or even taking the time to appreciate having a meal/conversation with your quarantined family.

Parent-Teacher Conferences began May 7, 2020 and will continue through the next two weeks (if needed). A Parent Teacher Conference is vital for you to know how your child is doing, especially in regards to Remote Learning and Instruction, as well as expected grades. Please be mindful, teachers do not know what’s happening with school in September or any information provided by NYC. The sole purpose of this conversation is to update you on your child’s progress.

The Chancellor has released his expectations for the city-wide grading policy, which you have received from your teacher or Ms. Lucy and is also available on the DOE Website- Update for Families-Grading Policy April 28 2020 Translations available.

A summary of the policy is: Students will receive Final Grades of either “Meets Standards” (MT) or “Needs Improvement” (N). Students will continue to receive a number grade of 1-4 for the 3rd Marking Period.

· “MT” represents students who are on Grade Level (for the year)- Level 3 or 4

· “N” represents students who are below Grade Level (for the year)- Level 1 or 2

While we are being understanding and flexible with work expectations and attendance, it is still expected that your child will work to P.S. 100 expectations, be present daily and submit quality, authentic work.

We will be holding Parent Town Hall meetings, by Grade Bands, the Week of May 18, 2020. We will be on hand to answer questions and update you with information we have about the Grading System, Graduation, next steps for school, etc. Information and links are forthcoming. Please be on the lookout. If you cannot make the meeting for your grade, you may attend another meeting. You may send questions to Ms. Lucy in advance to ensure your concerns/inquiries are addressed during the meeting. Her email address is Lmalave2@schools.nyc.gov.

As for our 5th graders, we do have confirmation that the yearbook will still be processed and shipped. We also will still be able to receive their Senior T-Shirts. Once we are able, we will let you know how you can get your yearbook and T-shirt but that may not be until September. As per Chancellor’s Regulations, we are not permitted to remove our check book or funds from the school building. Refunds for things like the trip and such will be on hold until we receive further guidance and are allowed in the school building. This may also happen in September. We will also work to try and figure out how to create a graduation or memorable event to celebrate our 5th Grade Students.
